Hay there. First of all congratulations!
And second, I wonder.. did you see my reply to ‘Lorny xx’ yesterday? ![]()
Basically:
I was always a worrier but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I had my first major attack. It was the single most scariest moment of my life- I had no idea what was happening at all and made my mum take me to the nurse in the following days.
She printed out all of these ‘self-help’ guides and booklets on ‘Dealing With Stress and panic’ but I’m a fairly closed-minded person and they didn’t help me much at all.
I started establishing when I seemed to get them- on my own, in bed and in the bath (times where I had too much time to think and you get the horrible rush of feelings) So I took myself out of those situations- I showered rather than bathed, made sure I was always occupied and started sleeping with the light on again.
When I felt an attack come on I would start counting in my head (or out loud as the case was sometimes.) I also focused very hard on controlling my breathing- using a paper bag it if it did get particularly bad.
I also started a diary- primarily to keep track of when I had them and what I thought caused them- worries and fears, stress, etc. At one point it seemed I developed such a dependency on it- I’d take it everywhere for a couple of months because I felt better with it. Overtime I began writing a bit more than just the panic- it became a regular diary. I also fell in love with my partner- something that perhaps took my mind off it.
I haven’t had a Panic Attack in about a year and a half now and barely even a scare.
I really hope you find something that helps- break stop the cycle- when you feel it coming on focus on stopping it straight away- ‘it can’t harm me’ ‘this is silly’ ‘just calm down’ (I’d even put a calming film on to distract me afterwards and stop it coming back!)
Sorry for the essay haha, and best of luck both with your wedding and child, and with stopping the panic
