Stress is a given in life. This is proven by the fact that the body is perfectly engineered to deal with stress not only on an emotional and psychological level but also in terms of the physiological dimension as well, thus, the so-called Anxiety. Hans Selye, an endocrinologist, purports the three stages by which people react to stress called the general adaptation syndrome. For people with the condition, the following are the types of panic attack cure:
1) Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This panic attack cure is done under the supervision of a therapist formally trained to teach the technique to a person diagnosed with the disorder. CBT involves various techniques which enable the person to control the progression of the signs and symptoms to fatal level by stopping negative thoughts or thinking positively (cognitive) and by applying constructive behavioral techniques to manage the anxiety (behavioral). Examples of CB techniques are positive framing, decatastrophizing, and assertive training. In positive framing, the person is taught to change negative thoughts of the “I’m going to die” nature to “I can overcome this.” Decatastrophizing, on the other hand, helps the person realistically appraise the situation by asking, “What can be the worst thing that may happen to me?” Lastly, assertive training educates the person to take control of common anxiety-producing situations.
2) Pharmacological. During the initial course of the therapy, affected people are usually prescribed drugs such as antidepressants and anti-Anxiety Medications. These drugs are not for long term use. They do not help treat the disorder per se but are geared toward symptomatic treatment. Their use as a panic attack cure is largely to aid the person in controlling the condition by eliminating the signs and symptoms enough for him or her to apply CB techniques.
3) Support. Aside from the panic attack cure mentioned above, a crucial aspect of the success of treatment endeavors is the support of significant others who encourage the person to overcome the disorder. They also serve as back-up system by providing safety, calming the person down, or bringing him or her to medical facilities when the person fails to utilize CB techniques effectively.
To maximize benefits from the above-mentioned panic attack cure of cognitive-behavioral therapy, pharmacological treatments, and support, the person must also exhibit strong desire to overcome the panic attack disorder.
