After Microsoft unexpectedly released the “new” release candidate for the upcoming Windows update on May 10. The rumours are now circulating about the delayed launch of the next feature update.

Microsoft postpones Windows 10 May 2020 update

Instead of May 12, the update should now be released on May 28 at the earliest. The team reports from the Windows Weekly podcast with Leo Laporte, Mary Jo Foley and Paul Thurrott. Microsoft has therefore postponed the release plan, for security reasons. Initially, it was planned to release the new Windows 10 version 2004 for consumers on the upcoming Patchday, May 12th. According to the report, Microsoft originally planned to deliver the update to developers and OEMs on April 28, before it should be released to the public on May 12, 2020.

A zero-day exploit is said to be the brake

However, these dates were delayed after a zero-day exploit was discovered. Now the Windows team is faced with the task of completing the fix so that a new feature update can be delivered along with the fix. Currently, the revised deadlines stipulate that the Windows 10 version of 2004 will be released to consumers on May 28, 2020. The update is available to OEMs on May 5th.

The new schedule:

  • Release for OEMs / PC manufacturers: May 5th
  • Developer update available: May 12
  • Windows 10 May 2020 Update General Availability: May 28th
Where the podcasters got the information from was not said. However, all three journalists are known for their good contacts and had already received important news from their sources in advance.

Waiting for the patchday

No details on a zero-day exploit. Vulnerability for Windows 10 users is likely to be fixed in the upcoming patch on May 12. The Windows team can then test the effect of the patch on the release candidate over the next two weeks and finally begin the release on May 28th. Nothing was confirmed in this information - now it will be necessary to see if this data is correct.
